At Heathrow 1,350 flights arrive and depart every day, that’s more than one movement per minute. It takes a hugely focused and highly skilled team of people to operate one of the world’s most complex airfields.
It’s the role of our Airport & Airside Operations teams to ensure the safe and efficient running of Heathrow. This involves careful alignment and collaboration with colleagues, partners and suppliers to ensure that we maintain our licence to operate and continue to deliver an exceptional service.

A career in Airport & Airside Operations is both exciting and rewarding. Our Operations department is broken down into five departments:
Airport Fire Service – positioned within the centre of our airfield to ensure the safety of our airport, responding to airfield incidents from aircraft incidents to fire alarms and medical emergencies in all the terminals. Our firefighters are essential in providing emergency support in high-pressure situations that can take place.
Airside Operations – this team is key in maintaining the operation of the airfield throughout the day, negotiating the careful management of aircraft movements on the ground. 24/7 365 days a year, the airfield is managed by a team comprising of Airfield Duty Managers, Airfield Operations Officers and Airfield Transport Officers.
Airport Operations Centre (APOC) – working collaboratively to enable Heathrow to deliver a dynamic and highly complex operations plan, the APOC teams interface with the whole Heathrow operation so the complete end-to-end passenger journey is considered. Airport Operations is comprised of the Airport Operations Managers, the Aircraft Operations Unit, Airport Control and Business Resilience.
Planning & Performance – running an airfield also requires careful planning and strategic decision-making. Our team are in place to support this and it’s the role of our analyst team to lead the identification and deployment of safe, efficient and resilient operational solutions, utilising Business Intelligence, in line with growth, air traffic, expansion and sustainability strategies.
Safety and Assurance – In such a dynamic and fast-paced environment such as our airfield, we need to ensure that safety is at the heart of everything we do. This team manages the structure of, and delivers a number of elements, including critical regulatory requirements and the backbones of a safe airfield operation.
